The Build-A-Bear Workshop® Velvety Teddy is among the stuffed toys rated as asthma & allergy friendly® and can be purchased online or in their stores for $16.

The asthma & allergy friendly™ Certification Program, administered by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) in partnership with the international research organization Allergy Standards Limited (ASL), is an independent program created to scientifically test and identify consumer products that are more suitable for people with asthma and allergies.

For example let’s take a look at children’s stuffed animals, which can harbor dust mites and accumulate allergen. For a stuffed toy to be certified asthma & allergy friendly™, it must be scientifically tested to prove:

  • Allergen that accumulate can be removed by washing.
  • It does not have sensitizing or allergenic chemicals such as formaldehyde.
  • The quality of construction and materials used allow it to withstand the recommended washing frequency.

Bedding is a close cousin to stuffed toys in the fact that mattresses and pillows can also collect dust mites and animal dander. Certified bedding is subjected to physical and chemical testing. It must prove:

  • It is an effective barrier to allergen.
  • Allergen that accumulate can be removed by washing.
  • There are no sensitizing or allergic chemicals such as formaldehyde.
  • It is manufactured from a breathable fabric.
  • It can withstand the recommended washing frequency.

When scientifically testing vacuums, they must prove:

  • It removes a specified and significant amount of allergens from carpeting.
  • Allergen is removed is retained within the vacuum cleaner.
  • The vacuum cleaner does not experience a reduction in allergen pick-up in the presence of a partly filled bag or receptacle.
  • The operator is not excessively exposed allergen upon bag or receptacle removal.

This testing and certifying serves to help allergy and asthma sufferers when making purchasing decisions. Look for the certified mark (shown above) on certain products.
